Golf in Turkey
Golf in Turkey has been booming over recent years and that trend looks set to continue. Although golf in Turkey is mostly a tourist activity there are some interesting facts about the consumption of golf in Turkey. According to KPMG’s 2017 Golf Participation Report – 43% of Turkey’s golf participation is by junior golfers – completely destroying the European average of 5% junior participation. Although figures are relatively small for golf participation as a whole in Turkey, this at least bodes well for the future of golf in the country.
Turkey as a Tourist Destination
Turkey endures generally a bad image as a tourist destination due to a number of factors that are brought to mainstream attention including political violence and political tension with Russia. However, if you ask anyone who has traveled to Turkey, from my experience at least, you will be told that the people are lovely, the country is beautiful and the tensions of mainstream media are far from the eye.
Turkey has a lot of tourist attractions but for the sake of this piece I’ll narrow the focus to Belek and the surrounding areas. With cultural connections to ancient Greek, Persian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires there is a real appreciation of history along the Mediterranean coastline of Turkey. Belek is a town on Turkey’s southern Mediterranean coast, known for its beaches, thermal spas and golf courses. Nearby archaeological sites include the Roman amphitheater at Aspendos and the ancient Greek city of Perge’s colonnaded streets. The town’s Troy Aqua water park features a dolphinarium.
Golf in Belek
Belek is easily accessible via Antalya Airport and after a 35 minute drive east you arrive at the beautiful coastal town of Belek which offers an abundance of golf. Just south of the town you will find no fewer than 11 golf resorts & courses which provide even the most skilled golfer with a serious test. ClubstoHire operate out of Belek with a handler on the ground who can deliver clubs to your hotel and collect them at the end of your stay.
The PGA National Turkey Antalya Golf Club
The first golf resort in Turkey to feature 36 holes and having played host to some of the biggest names in the game, the PGA National Turkey Antalya Golf Club is regarded as one of Europe’s premier golfing venues.
The host of numerous high-profile tournaments including the 2012 Turkish Airlines World Golf Final – which featured the likes of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and eventual winner Justin Rose – the resort raised its global profile further in 2017 by joining the select group of courses to receive the official endorsement of The Professional Golfers’ Association, being renamed as the PGA National Turkey.
Montgomerie Maxx Royal
Montgomerie Maxx Royal provides the ideal location for all players looking to walk in the footsteps of Europe’s leading golf stars. Picturesque pine forest course located just outside Belek, Montgomerie Maxx Royal is designed by legendary Scottish golfer Colin Montgomerie and European Golf Design. The course, which retained its position as number 1 of Turkey according to the reviews of leadingcourses.com visitors, has hosted the European Tour Final Series in 2013, 2014 and 2015. As an added feature and something everyone has to experience, the Montomerie Maxx Royal offers after-dark golf by means of powerful floodlights.
Regnum Carya Golf & Spa Resort
Chosen as the top golf destination by IAGTO in 2008, Regnum Carya Golf and Spa Resort houses two world-class golf courses – The Carya Golf Club and the National Golf Club. Celebrated as the first illuminated 18 hole course in Europe, the Carya Golf Club was host of the 2017 Turkish Airlines Open whilst the neighbouring National Golf Club offered 27 holes for spectators and guests to enjoy during the competition.
