Cregmore Celebrate Zone Victory

Punching above their Weight!!!!

Cregmore Park is undoubtedly the surprise package in the South Section of the Connacht GUI Inter-Club matches this year. In the section which includes the Goliath’s of County Galway golf clubs such as Galway GC, Athenry, Galway Bay, Oughterard all multiple winners of Green Pennants, Cregmore has certainly been the David in 2018. Having beaten Galway Bay in the Zone Final last Saturday in the Pierce Purcell, the Club are now looking forward to the first time in taking their place at the Connacht Finals in Roscommon in August. Under the Captaincy of Declan McGrath, they will take on Ballinrobe for
a place in the Final. The other Semi-Final see’s Athlone, conquerors of last year’s winners Portumna play Tubbercurry who took out Ballaghdereen in the North Section Zone Final.

This is indeed a unique position that Cregmore finds themselves in given their limited numbers and only in existence 10 years. Their Team Captain, Declan McGrath is of course son of the popular owners Murty and the “one and only” Catherine. Declan is without doubt the most enthusiastic Captain that this writer has ever spoken to and I thought I had it in spades!!! He is Captain no less of three teams this year and when I spoke to him his love of Inter-Club golf was in no doubt and totally infectious.

We are so delighted to be through to a Connacht Semi-Final and we will bring some crowd of supporters to Roscommon” commented an excited McGrath. Asked who were his star players he refused to comment only to say “they all played their part, including the losing pair and especially the rest of the lads who make up the panel”. “No prima donna’s here. I even dropped myself for the Zone Final last Saturday”. Elaborating further on the squad “four of our players are under thirty years of age and we only
had one pairing that matched the 25 handicap allowance. All other pairings were in and around a combined handicap of 30”.

This really goes to prove that a Club no matter what size can achieve great success with great leadership and a committed and united panel. Declan also enjoyed success with the Over 55’s team only losing out to a very strong Gort team in the Zone Final.
The Club won its first ever Mixed Foursome’s match against Gort before coming undone against a much-fancied Athenry team in the Zone Semi-Final. Declan confirmed to me that the Club had a winning streak of 8 unbeaten matches in the various Inter-Club events. This is indeed an unbelievable record matched by no other Club in the Province. Congrats to all concerned at Cregmore and especially Murty & Catherine who have done so much to keep the Club afloat in difficult times and who are so supportive of their Club teams. This writer has played matches there and the Welcome one gets is absolutely brilliant and I for one will be cheering on our South Section representatives at the Connacht Finals.
